    We're happy to welcome Christina Brandstetter, Daisy Garner, and Irina Dietrich within our ranks. While Christina and Daisy will support Professor Matthes's teaching activities, Irina will be a research assistant within our European Union-funded Horizon 2020 project YouCount.

    Christina has recently started our Master program in Journalism and Communication Studies after completing her Bachelor studies in February 2023. She has already been a tutor for Communication Research Logics and Philosophy of Science at our Department.

    Daisy studied German and Psychology at William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA, USA (BA: 2021). From October onwards, she will be a student of our English-speaking Master program in Communication Science.

    Irina studied Comparative Literature (BA: 2021) and Journalism and Communication (BA: 2022) at our university. Since March 2022, she is studying toward a MA qualification in the Department of Political Science.

    Top Paper Awards at AEJMC!
    Our team was once again present at AEJMC's annual convention, which was held in Washington, D.C., and where two of the team's papers were honored with Top Paper Awards. First up, the collaboration of Ruta Kaskeleviciute, Helena Knupfer, and Jörg Matthes entitled 'I stand up for us'. Muslims' feelings of stigmatization in response to terrorism on social media received the Second Place Faculty Paper Award of the Religion & Media Interest Group.

    Further, the first major piece of work of our ERC-funded project on digital hate involving Jörg Matthes, Kevin Koban, Stephanie Bührer, Thomas Kirchmair, Phelia Weiß, Maryam Khaleghipour, Melanie Saumer, and Rinat Meerson was honored with the Second Place Top Paper Award in the Communication Theory and Methodology Division Open Paper Competition. The title of the paper is The state of evidence in digital hate research: An umbrella review.

We're proud to announce that Andreas Nanz was honored with the Political Communication Division PhD Dissertation Award of the International Communication Association (ICA). Andi received the award for his outstanding dissertation entitled Incidental exposure in the online world: Antecedents, mechanisms, and consequences, which he completed with "summa cum laude" in August 2022.

    Top Paper Awards at ICA in Toronto! Three of our team's papers presented at this year's annual conference of the International Communication Association (ICA) have been honored with a total of four Top Paper Awards.
    First, the contribution A tale of two concepts. Differential predictions of habitual and compulsive social media use concerning connection overload and sleep quality by Kevin Koban, Anja Stevic, and Jörg Matthes received a Top 4 Paper Panel Award by the Mobile Communication Division.

    Further, Marina F. Thomas, Alice Binder, and Jörg Matthes were awarded a Top Student-led Paper Award for their research on The psychological influence of number of profiles and decision mode on dating apps: When locomotion is self-devaluing, also by the Mobile Communication Division.

    Last but not least, Phelia Weiß, Helena Knupfer, Ruta Kaskeleviciute, and Jörg Matthes were awarded two prizes (Top Poster Award by the Journalism Studies Division as well as an ICA Top Student Poster Award) for their presentation entitled Femicides in the news: Effects of victims' and perpetrators' nationality on victim blaming and fear of victimization.

    Top AdMe job placement!
    Marlis Stubenvoll, who has been part of our team since 2017, has accepted a position as Senior Scientist at the University of Klagenfurt (Austria) and has joined Professor Christina Peter’s team.

    Prior to becoming a long-term AdMe member, Marlis studied German Philology (BA, 2014) at the University of Vienna. After completing her master studies in Journalism, Media and Globalisation at the Universities of Amsterdam (NL) and Aarhus (DK), Marlis joined AdMe in November 2017 as a project assistant and predoctoral researcher. In 2018, she was awarded a competitive and prestigious uni:docs fellowship for a period of three years. Since October 2021, Marlis was part of the NORFACE project team investigating consequences of data-driven campaigns for democracies. She recently defended her dissertation entitled Why misperceptions persist: The role of resistance to evidence in political news with "summa cum laude" (highest honor).

    Maryam Khaleghipour joining ERC project DigiHate! Maryam, who has already been a Research Fellow at our department since last fall, will support DigiHate as a predoctoral researcher for the upcoming years.

    Before joining AdMe, Maryam studied Social Communication Science (M.A, 2019) at the University of Tehran, Iran. In 2022, she received a prestigious fellowship by the Haamee Institute for Advancement of Humanities and Social Sciences (based in Iran) to start her doctoral studies at the University of Vienna.

    Michaela Forrai re-joining AdMe! We are delighted to welcome back Michaela as a predoctoral researcher within our team. Together with Jörg Matthes and Kevin Koban, she will conduct the research project Social Media Use and Adolescents' Well-Being, funded by the Austrian Science Fund.
    Ela is a familiar face in our research group, having supported us in various projects from 2018-2022 as a Bachelor and Master student. During the last year, she was a predoctoral researcher within Florian Arendt's project Reporting on Suicide in the Nineteenth Century.

    New AdMe members! We're happily welcoming Stephanie Bührer and Thomas Kirchmair within our ranks, who will be part of our ERC-funded research project DigiHate.

    Stephanie studied Psychology (MSc, 2015) at the University of Vienna. Prior to joining AdMe, she worked as a research assistant at the University of Bern (2015-2016) and long-term lecturer (since 2017) at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Vienna.

    Thomas is studying toward MA qualifications both in Journalism and Communication Studies as well as Digital Humanities. He has already gained extensive experience as research assistant within various projects at the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), among others. After completing his master thesis supervised by Jörg Matthes, he will become a predoctoral researcher within the project DigiHate.

    Alice Binder re-joining AdMe! We are very happy to welcome back Alice as a Senior Scientist within our team. She was already part of AdMe from October 2016 to November 2021, both as a predoctoral and a postdoctoral researcher.
